William McLean

Alumni Spotlight

William McLean was a beloved member of the Campbell University community, remembered not only for his athletic talent but also for his remarkable character and dedication to excellence. A distinguished member of the Fighting Camels baseball team from 1994 to 1998, William left an indelible mark on and off the field.

A true scholar-athlete, William earned his degree in Trust Management and went on to complete his MBA in 1999. His academic dedication was recognized nationally when he was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1998. A testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence in the classroom and on the field. On the baseball diamond, William’s 1997 season stood out as one of the finest in Campbell history. He played in 57 games, tying the university’s single-season record, and batted an impressive .303. With 61 hits, 15 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs, and 30 RBIs, he was a cornerstone of the Fighting Camels’ offense. This continued into the 1998 season where he batted .312 with 11 home runs, 52 RBI, 64 hits and 45 runs scored.

After graduation, William continued to share his passion for the game as the Assistant Head Coach for Pfeiffer University Baseball. He devoted countless hours to mentoring young athletes through his work with the Stanley Recreation Department, coaching baseball, softball, and basketball. His commitment to youth development and his community was as unwavering as his love for the game.

William McLean’s legacy lives on in the memories of teammates, students, players, and all those who had the privilege to know him. He will forever be remembered as a leader, a mentor, and a true Campbell Camel.
